The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2

ImageOne of the most interesting aspects of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 is the film’s nonchalant take on interracial dating. The girls are definitely the stars of this teen chick flick, but the boys make for necessary accessories that keep the drama moving along. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants is a series of four bestselling young adult novels by Ann Brashares. Released by Random House Publications, the novels tell the continuing story of four girls who acquire a pair of magical jeans that fit all four of them perfectly, even though they’re all different shapes and sizes.
Two of the four girls let their pants travel to
the floor during their relationships with men of color, and there are no questions on their choices, whispers behind their backs, or even acknowledgement the guys’ race by the other two girls in the film.

Has America really become that tolerant - Or is it just a Hollywood fantasy? Then again, it’s a adaptation of the popular novels by Ann Brashares, so the producers probably wanted to stay true to the books for its loyal fans.

The guys are the Asian Brian and mulatto Leo… Brian is played by Korean-Australian Leonardo Nam. He gets to play the sensitive Emo kind of guy usually reserved for Jared Leto types. He can next be seen in another chick flick, the highly anticipated He’s Just Not That Into You starring Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Connelly, and Drew Barrymore. Unfortunately, I doubt he’ll be a serious contender for one of their hearts in that film.
Lifelong friends embark on separate paths for their first year of college and the summer beyond, but remain in touch by sharing their experiences with each other as they always have–with honesty and humor. Discovering their individual strengths, fears, talents and capacity for love through the choices they make, they come to value more than ever the bond they share and the immeasurable power of their friendship.
The artist/nude art model Leo is played by Jesse Williams. The women in the audience gasped and oohed at his beauty when he appeared on screen (actually, I was the only guy in the afternoon showing). His piercing light blue eyes really pop of the screen. The only apparent fault I can find are his snaggle teeth. He looked a little self-conscious on the screen with his top lip trying to vain to cover up his crooked canines. He doesn’t have too many acting credits, but he currently has fourth billing in 2009’s Brooklyn’s Finest after Wesley Snipes, Richard Gere and Ethan Hawke. With Snipes not going to be able to promote the film from the slammer, and Gere and Hawke lucky to still be working, it’s hard to say if this vehicle will help Williams on his trek to stardom.

Hopefully, Sisterhood and the upcoming Lakeview Terrace (which features a mixed race marriage) are part of a new trend in Hollywood… A color-blind trend.
